CHAPTER 20

Five minutes later both boats were underway. The coxswains pushed out of the harbor, slow and steady until they hit the sea buoy. Once past the buoy, the coxswains accelerated, outboards screaming out of the harbor as the boat rocked and rolled under the powerful engines.

From the pier Lakshani received permission to have a Mil Mi-24 attack helicopter take off from the Air Force base, which was shared with the Bandaranaike International Airport. Staying covert at five thousand feet and when the team was ready to execute, it would drop to one thousand, maybe lower. From there it would hover over the fishing boat while giving task direction to stop.

Staring out into the ocean, Courtney’s face was battered by the wind. Looking to her right, she cracked a smile at Alex and at the same time admired the emptiness of the vast ocean in front of them. She imagined that this was the closest feeling to being a dog and sticking its head out of a car window.

“Test, test,” said Antonio, covering his mouth from the wind.

“Test sat,” responded the group.

“When we secure the boat and find this guy, leave the rest to me,” said Antonio.

After about thirty minutes to an hour at sea, what seemed like an eternity, was finally over. The helicopter spotted the vessel by the numbering over the top of the boat’s pilot house. Clouds overhead were nonexistent. Some other fishing boats were in sight but not many as the team went to work. Once the call on the radio came through, the team waited until they were about a mile out. Grabbing the railing of Kalana’s seat, Courtney used it as a crutch to stand and prop her body, matching the movement of the boat. “Okay, tell Lakshani to send the helo in!”

Kalana nodded, reached for his radio, and went to work on his new orders. In less than a minute the team witnessed the helicopter drop down over their target, open the gunner door, and produce a manned 240 machine gun.

“I spy with my little eye, movement on the deck,” said Antonio, standing next to her with binoculars.

“Any sign of an American?” asked Alex, doing a press check of his MP5.

“Negative,” responded Antonio, giving the binoculars to Courtney after a tap on his shoulder.

Minutes later Kalana watched the second Cedric boat pull up, providing ample security in addition to the helicopter. Once the coxswain from the other boat gave Kalana the all clear, he turned and said, “You guys ready to board?”

“Let’s do it!” said Courtney.

Kalana drove the boat up to the port side stern of the fishing vessel and Courtney and the Bering Group jumped over the gunwale after the SBS crew members. Staying out of their way, the Bering Group secured the stern while the SBS did what they did best and secured the passengers and crew on the bow and cleared the rest of the boat. They were quick and precise. A minute and a half later another all clear came across the headsets and the Bering Group was ready to go to work.
